NICER observation list: Target ID 263401

Abstract

We propose a campaign of joint NuSTAR and NICER observations of the quiescent neutron star Cen X-4, to study the relationship between its soft X-ray flux level and its hard X-ray spectrum. The hard X-ray spectrum has been hypothesized to be due to thermal bremsstrahlung from active accretion onto the neutron star, and may transit to synchrotron emission at low flux. If the bremsstrahlung/active accretion hypothesis is correct, we should be able to measure spectral changes with our proposed campaign.
