NICER observation list: Target ID 861101

Abstract

A recent NICER study of the neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) Cyg X-2 discovered low energy (0.5 3 keV) quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) that were not detected at higher energies with NuSTAR. We are proposing a follow-up study of a similar source, GX 3+1, to search for low energy QPOs with 40 ks of NICER observations jointly with 20 ks of NuSTAR data to elucidate the nature of the QPOs and the corresponding accretion disk geometry and lead the way towards a unified explanation for the behavior of NS LMXBs. A Fourier frequency resolved spectro-temporal study can lead to results that can provide us with a better knowledge of the association between the timing features (QPOs) and the overall accretion disk-corona and BL geometry.
