NICER observation list: Target ID 866404

Abstract

Quasi-Periodic Eruptions (QPEs) have shown a growing association with TDEs, which was recently confirmed by the discovery of QPEs in previously known, spectroscopically confirmed optical TDEs. X-ray follow-up of known TDEs at late times is thus the most promising avenue for targeted discovery of further QPEs, given that all-sky X-ray surveys and archival studies have mostly exhausted other discovery streams. To this end, we have performed a comprehensive survey of Swift, NICER, and eROSITA archival data of all known TDEs (∼150 total) to determine whether any of them show QPE-like variability. We propose for NICER follow-up of four optically-selected TDEs, showing extremely unusual rapid high-amplitude X-ray variability, to confirm whether they are QPEs.
