Abstract:

Abell 3376 (z=0.046) is a merging cluster with a T=4 keV (*3) hosting a pair of strong radio halos (see figure). It is one of the few clusters from which BeppoSAX positively detected excess hard X-rays (Nevalainen et al. ApJ 608, 166, 2004). Because of the relatively low temperature, the HXD-PIN energy band is expected to be relatively free from thermal emission, making this object ideal to the search for non-thermal signals. We expect the non-thermal flux to be 4-5% of the PIN background at 20 keV, and a 150 ksec on-source exposure would be needed to securely detect this. To know the current background over the full COR range, an off-source exposure for one day or a ~40 ksec exposure onto a very soft source, would be required immediately before or after the on-source data acquisition.
