Abstract:

The standard theory of the post-shock plasma in intermediate polars predicts that the shock height is negligibly small compared with the radius of the white dwarf under normal accretion state. Some recent observational results, however, seem to contradict this prediction, and suggest that the shock height may be of the same order as the white dwarf radius. The shock height is an important quantity for the post-shock plasma in that it is deeply related to the mass accretion rate, heating and cooling mechanism of the post-shock plasma and so on. We therefore propose to observe two of the brightest intermediate polars EX Hya and V1223 Sgr to measure their shock height directly in terms of the reflection spectrum from the HXD-PIN and the iron K-shell structure from the XIS.
