Abstract:
Suzaku has recently revealed relativistically broadened Fe Kalpha emission lines in the spectra of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We have now seen these lines in 10 neutron star LMXBs that we have examined, allowing measurements of the inner accretion disk radius, and hence an upper limit on the neutron star radius in all these objects. Only with the sensitivity of Suzaku, its high effective area in the Fe K band, and its broad bandpass has it been possible to robustly determine the shape of the lines. With a longer-term aim of completing a census of iron lines in neutron star LMXBs, we request a total of 200 ks to observe 5 neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries to study the relativistic broadening in the Fe Kalpha emission line profiles.
