Abstract:

4U 1210-64 is a high mass X-ray binary with a stable 6.7 day period when the long-term (RXTE ASM) light curve is analyzed. However, we observed strong aperiodic variability in a series of pointed observations with the RXTE PCA, to the point of masking this 6.7 day period. Moreover, we have not detected a spin period, even though the accretor is most likely a neutron star. The strong variability is suggestive of accretion from a clumpy wind. We propose a 2-day Suzaku observation of this object (1) to search for unequivocal evidence for a neutron star, such as the spin period and cyclotron features; and (2) to measure the spectral shapes at different flux levels, to investigate the cause of the strong aperiodic variability.
