Abstract:
The Vela supernova remnant (SNR) displays remarkable features which appear to be ejecta ``shrapnel'' visible beyond the main shell. One of these shrapnel (A) is distinct from the others in that its X-ray spectrum exhibits a high Si abundance, while the other shrapnel exhibit enhanced O, Ne, and Mg abundances. One unexplored ejecta shrapnel (G) is located on the opposite side of the remnant from shrapnel A, suggesting that the SN explosion may have resulted in a jet-counterjet Si-rich structure, reminiscent of Cas A. We propose to observe this shrapnel for the first time to determine if it is also Si-rich like shrapnel A. If this is the case, the Vela SNR may be the first direct evidence of a jet-induced SN explosion.
