Abstract:

We propose a 100 ks Suzaku observation of the nucleus of the nearby (z=0.0597) FRII radio galaxy 3C 33, to constrain the nature of its Compton reflection component, and make an accurate measurement of its Fe Ka emission line. 3C 33 (awarded category-C time in Suzaku AO-1, not observed) is the only radio-loud AGN with evidence of Compton reflection in its low-energy (< 10 keV) spectrum, and so offers a unique opportunity to study both the soft- and hard-band properties of reflection. The HXD will allow us, for the first time, to constrain the nature of the Compton reflection component in 3C 33 and, when combined with the superb sensitivity of the XIS, will enable us to determine the line-of-sight geometry and structure of the reflecting region.
