Abstract:

We propose to observe an isolated elliptical galaxy NGC3923, to meaasure a dark matter distribution. The large effective area and stable low background of XIS enable us to measure a faint extended X-ray emission such as the periphery of elliptical galaxies more accurately than ever. Since X-ray bright elliptical galaxies have been found to be surrounded by group-scale emission, X-ray faint elliptical galaxies are the best to investigate the dark matter associated with the galaxy itself. The dark matter around galaxies is a key to resolve the problem of why X-ray bright and faint elliptical galaxies exist. The oxygen abundance distribution is also useful to probe the above issue.
