Abstract:

The Sausage Cluster is a violent merging galaxy cluster that offers unique opportunities to study the physics of particle acceleration and shocks in the ICM. We propose Suzaku observations of the southern part of the Sausage Cluster to (i) measure the Mach number of a merger related shock and (ii) determine the temperature distribution in the entire cluster outskirts. These observations will provide the first complete view of a system of merger-induced radio shocks and therefore play a crucial role in (1) understanding the impacts of such shocks on the evolution of galaxy clusters, (2) determining the physics of particle acceleration at low Mach number shocks, and (3) providing vital input for modeling the merger event in detail.
