****************************************************** PR # 42028 Old novae are those cataclysmic variables which were seen to have a classical nova outburst, and have some of the most securely determined distance estimates. Some of the brightest novae are known to contain magnetic white dwarfs; we will test claims of magnetic nature in our targets, V603 Aql and CP Pup, although we believe they are non-magnetic. If non-magnetic, they are the best systems, among old novae and nova-likes, to perform ASCA spectroscopy on, because they are X-ray bright and have securely known distances. We will compare the spectra with those of other non magnetic CVs observed with ASCA. ******************************************************
