Proposal Abstract

GHz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources have convex spectra with the peak frequency in GHz range. Turnover spectrum in GPS source is considered to be due to synchrotron self absorption or free-free absorption. Recently, our VSOP observation of a GPS source, OQ208, showed asymmetric absorption towards double lobes of OQ208. This result suggests free-free absorption external plasma existing around the source. We propose VSOP observations at 1.6 and 5 GHz of the nearest GPS source NGC 1052 to confirm whether free-free absorption is common characteristic in GPS sources or not. For this study, it is neccesary to observe optically thick part of the spectrum with enough high resolution, and only VSOP observations towards nearby GPS allow us to obtain high resolution images at 1.6 and 5 GHz.

The full Cover Sheets (compressed post-script, typically 50kbytes) can be retrieved. Note that many proposals were reduced in extent by the Scientific Review Committee (e.g. by reducing the number of experiments), however the Cover Sheets contain the full proposal as submitted. Also note that AO2 proposals were submitted in May 1998, and information such as affiliations and contact details has changed for some proposers since that time. The Cover Sheets (and the details on this page, which were derived from the Cover Sheets) may therefore have changed.
