Proposal Abstract

The collimation mechanism of jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been one of the most important problems in astrophysics. We would like to propose VLBA observations of 3C 273 jet in order to derive the Faraday Rotation Measure (RM) distribution in it, and the RM-corrected directions of the magnetic field, because we HAVE FOUND that a bright knot of the jet, the component C2, shows a very characteristic feature which strongly suggests a helical magnetic field of the jet. An opportunity of a follow-up observation will allow us to establish a clue for the collimation mechanism of AGN jets.

The full Cover Sheets (compressed post-script, typically 50kbytes) can be retrieved. Note that some proposals were reduced in extent by the Scientific Review Committee (e.g. by reducing the number of experiments), however the Cover Sheets contain the full proposal as submitted. Also note that AO5 proposals were submitted in February 2001, and information such as affiliations and contact details has changed for some proposers since that time.
