NICER observation list: Target ID 360901

Building upon a pilot pre-GO phase program, we propose for monthly monitoring of LMC X-3, the softest, most highly-variable, and least absorbed of the persistent black hole X-ray binaries in the sky. Our goal is to empirically determine changes in disk structure as the accretion disk evolves from thin to 'slim' when the disk approaches the Eddington limit. We demonstrate that LMC X-3 is uniquely suitable to disk continuum science, and that NICER is the most capable X-ray instrument for the science at hand.
