PDS456
The luminous nearby quasar, PDS 456, hosts the archetypical UFO, with a typical outflow velocity of 0.3c. In 2024, XRISM revealed a highly clumpy wind in PDS 456, requiring a super-Eddington outflow rate of at least 60 solar masses per year. Now the goal is to understand the variability of the massive outflow in PDS 456, through a new, simultaneous, XRISM, XMM and NuSTAR campaign. Here, a 250ks XRISM exposure is requested, to understand the variability of the clumpy Fe K wind at high spectral resolution. The 2024 PV observation captured a rare obscured state and the new observations may probe very different wind properties, through the variations of the absorption troughs. This will reveal whether the clumpy, super-Eddington wind phase remains persistent and how its kinetic power responds.
