Abstract

We propose a 150ks snapshot of Fairall 9 with XRISM during our 34 orbit HST spectroscopic monitoring campaign (April-September 2026) to explore the structure of the BLR. A recent intensive monitoring campaign has given a unique insight into the structure of the inner flow. The missing piece is how the BLR structure links to this inner flow. HST gives the optical/UV spectra, allowing for a decomposition of the disc and BLR emission. But the optical/UV line-shapes are highly sensitive to radiative transfer effects, so not suitable for determining the BLR structure. The X-ray Fe-Ka line is a much more robust tracer of column-density. XRISM is uniquely able to resolve this line-shape, allowing us to model the BLR structure, giving a unique window into the link between the central flow and BLR.
