Abstract

The accretion columns in magnetic cataclysmic variables (MCVs) serve as prime laboratories for examining cooling-flow collisional-ionization-equilibrium (CIE) plasma. Fe-K lines, originating from the hot top region of the column, are essential for the diagnostics. We propose a 160 ksec observation of AM Her to achieve the following science goals: 1) Benchmarking the cooling-flow CIE plasma through temperature and density diagnostics, 2) Analyzing shock heating via Doppler velocity measurements of pre/post-shock materials, 3) Determining plasma shape through optically-thick resonance lines within optically-thin plasma, 4) Inferring white dwarf composition from the Compton hump.
