XRISM xtend observation 201068010

Object

GRS1915+105

Abstract

After a long period wherein it was the archetype micro-quasar, GRS 1915+105 has spent the last several years in a highly obscured state that evokes Compton- thick AGN like NGC 1068. However, even in its most obscured phases it is an order of magitude brighter than NGC 1068, and it can deliver even deeper insights into accretion and outflows in this universally important mode. We request a 30 ks observation with XRISM to perform line diagnostics that will reveal the relative radial positioning of cold and hot gas components components, whether or not they are bound to the system or escaping, how much mechanical power is being channeled into the flows, and how the flows relate to the large obscuring column density.
