Abstract

Polars represent a distinct class of highly magnetized CVs. Measuring their white dwarf (WD) masses is crucial to understanding the origin of WD magnetic fields and the mass evolution of CVs. By fully characterizing Fe K-shell lines with Resolve, we will perform the most detailed X-ray spectroscopic study for two polars (AM Her and EF Eri): (1) robustly testing the conventional Fe line flux ratio diagnostics, (2) detecting non-equilibrium plasma with differing ion and electron temperatures near the shock region, (3) applying new methods of determining WD masses through measuring shock velocities and gravitational redshifts, and (4) constraining the accretion geometry. The proposed observations will demonstrate the unique capabilities of XRISM to probe the fundamental CV astrophysics.
