Abstract

XRISM has recently revealed a multi-component ultra-fast outflow (UFO) in the quasar PDS 456, challenging the picture of homogeneous UFOs in active galactic nuclei (AGN). We therefore propose a 250ks XRISM exposure on its lower-mass, lower-luminosity sibling, I Zwicky 1 (I ZW 1). By taking advantage of the much shorter variability timescale, we can not only resolve the Fe-K region of I ZW 1 but also understand the variability of UFOs at the highest spectral resolution. With the proposed observation, we aim to resolve the structure of UFOs, constrain their response to source flux variations, and accurately quantify the mass and kinetic power of outflows.
