XRISM xtend observation 203014010

Abstract

We propose to observe the Galactic middle-aged supernova remnant Puppis A with an exposure time of 200 ks. This observation is motivated by recent findings by a XRISM observation of this remnant: 1) Resolve possibly detected stronger-than-expected line emission from low-ionized ions, and 2) Xtend detected hard X-ray emission localized in the northeastern area. Low-ionized ions may originate from dust grains destroyed by thermal sputtering, whose X-ray signature has been long-awaited but still uncovered in hot dusty plasmas. To find solid evidence for eroding dust, we propose to observe the bright eastern knot. Xtend's large field of view can cover the hard X-ray emitting region, allowing us to map the distribution of the hard X-ray emission.
